Purpose

Under limited supervision, patrols within the city limits while exercising responsibility for the enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety and welfare. Controls traffic, prevents crime or disturbances of the peace, and arrests violators. While working under often stressful, high-risk conditions, applies good independent judgment when dealing with dangerous or unusual situations and implements safe practices and procedures. Reports to the Patrol Lieutenant, or acting supervisor.

Essential Job Duties

Patrols in a patrol unit, bicycle, ATV, or on foot, within the city limits, including the beach, for possible criminal activity or other conditions that could endanger public safety; investigates complaints and enforces laws; maintains high visibility.

Identifies, investigates, and reports accidents, dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions to the appropriate departments or agencies.

Apprehends, arrests, and detains criminal suspects and law violators when necessary; follows proper procedures when making arrests to ensure the safety of arresting officer, the public, and the suspect.

Responds to requests for assistance by, or complaints from, the public via dispatch and completes paperwork related to policing duties.

Investigates crimes, interviews witnesses, complainants, and victims; gathers physical evidence for court use; conducts follow up investigations if necessary.

Enforces vehicle traffic regulations; observes traffic conditions and issues traffic citations

Enforces all applicable laws of the State of Louisiana and the Town of Grand Isle; notes suspicious persons and establishments and reports to supervisor.

Maintains responsibility for the upkeep of their assigned patrol unit and any related equipment that is the property of the Town of Grand Isle.

Assumes control at traffic accidents to maintain smooth traffic flow, assists traffic accident victims, and investigates causes of accidents.

Minimum Requirements

  • Be at least twenty-one years of age
  • Possess and maintain a valid Louisiana Driver's License
  • Be P.O.S.T. Level 1 certified with Louisiana OR possess an equivalent out-of-state certification and be within 5 years of their last full-time Police Officer position
  • Must live within 30 miles of the city limits of Grand Isle by the end of their probationary period.  Preferred candidates will be willing to move within the city limits of Grand Isle.

Full-time officers start at $14/hr with a pay increase at the end of probationary period, a pay increase for living within the city limits of Grand Isle, over-time, access to details, continued training and education, vacation, sick leave, health insurance, and a take home unit.
